STEAM Saturday – M&M Science Rainbow! (3/12/2022)

It’s STEAM Saturday!  With St. Patrick’s Day coming up next week, we have rainbows on the brain!  Coming off last week’s coffee filter flower activity, we thought this week would be a great opportunity to reinforce the concept of solubility with an incredibly simple project – creating a rainbow with M&Ms!

This activity could not be easier.  All you need are M&Ms, a plate, and some water!

First, take your M&Ms and place them in a circle around the plate in rainbow color order – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and repeat. Then, gently add enough water, starting in the middle of the plate, until it is touching all of the M&Ms. Now, you wait!  As the water interacts with the soluble ink from the candies, and due to the shape of the plate and position of the M&Ms, a beautiful rainbow design will form right in the center of the plate.

Of course, after all of that science-ing, you should definitely treat yourselves to some yummy chocolate.  As always, don’t forget to have lots of fun together.
