STEAM Saturday – Coffee Filter Flowers! (3/5/2022)

Welcome to another edition of STEAM Saturday!

Spring is just around the corner, and we thought we would get a head start by mixing art and science with these coffee filter flowers.  All you need is round coffee filters, washable markers, a gallon size zipper bag or metal sheet pan, scissors, pipe cleaners, and a spray bottle full of water.

Flatten out your coffee filters, and use the markers to draw in colors and patterns – however you’d like!  Then put them onto your gallon bag or metal baking sheet and mist them with your spray bottle.  Watch as the colors blend and spread!  This is a great opportunity to teach your child about solubility – the ability for something to dissolve in liquid.  The ink in the washable markers dissolves when you spray the water on it.

Once all of your coffee filters are dry, you can go about using your pipe cleaners to form your flowers and stems.  As always, get as creative as you want, and make sure to have lots of fun together!
