The challenge

Our Cordova Site is located within Chapel District Elementary School. We have one dedicated preschool classroom, and our before- and after-school and summer camp programs are hosted in the school’s cafeteria.

Although effective, the cafeteria is not an ideal location. During the school year, the before- and after-school program runs from 6:45 am – 8:30 am and 2:30 pm-5:30 pm. Each morning, CACC teachers arrive at the cafeteria to set up activities prior to students arriving and then clean up after the children leave for class. In the afternoon, the process is repeated.

Operating in this manner is challenging. On a number of occasions, the school schedules programming in the cafeteria space, requiring CACC to move to other locations in the school.

In addition, this site currently has a waiting list of more than 100 children.

At this time, TCPS is planning to renovate and expand Chapel District Elementary School with construction scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024. According to TCPS’s renovation designs, Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers’ current classroom and entrance will be located in the middle of the newly designed bus pick-up and drop-off loop, which creates a safety issue for Critchlow students. Additionally, parents will be required to park at the opposite end of the school and walk their children through the school to our room. Because of these issues, TCPS has asked if we would consider moving to another location within the school.

The opportunity

We are presented with an exciting opportunity to build a new preschool classroom and two much-needed school age classrooms for before- and after-school care and summer camp.

This would eliminate the need to use the school’s cafeteria… Hooray!

A small Site Director’s office and a teacher workroom are also included in the proposed design.

The two new classrooms will double the number of children we can care for in our school age programs from 30 to 60.
