New Year’s Eve is just around the corner, and we are ready to celebrate! We’ve got a really fun STEAM Project you can do at home with your little one. Help them ring in 2023 with homemade confetti poppers! First, read the book, The Night Before New Years, by Natasha Wing. We have included a read along video below.
The Night Before New Years is a book about a family that is determined to stay up until midnight on New Year’s Eve. Sound familiar? While you’re trying to stay awake, you and your child can make these simple and super fun confetti poppers to use when the ball drops!
This easy project can be made with items from around your house: toilet paper rolls, balloons, construction paper, and decorative supplies.
Here’s how to make your confetti poppers: First, cut the top part off a balloon and wrap the open end around one end of the toilet paper tube. Next, tie the bottom of the balloon as normal. Secure the balloon into place with tape. Now, decorate your popper. You can use stickers, markers, crayons, paint… whatever you want!
To make your confetti, cut paper into small squares (smaller pieces fly farther, but bigger ones are easier to clean up – wink, wink). You can also add lightweight ribbon or – if you’re feeling especially daring – glitter. Just make sure it’s all light enough to fly through the air.
Once the countdown starts, add your confetti to your tubes. When everyone yells “Happy New Year!” pull back the balloon and let it go. There will be a popping sound, and the confetti will go flying!

As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
