It’s the beginning of a new year, and the perfect time for your child to learn about the seasons! You can make learning fun by working with your little one to create a spinning Wheel of the Year. This project can be done with supplies found around your house. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Paper Plates – the thick ones spin the best
- 4 colors of Construction Paper to represent your seasons.
- 4 colors of Craft Sticks to represent the seasons (your child can color these yourself if you don’t have colored ones)
- Thumbtack
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Marker
- Glue stick
- White Glue
- Tape
- Clothespin (optional to mark the current month)
- Computer with printer or stickers with the month names and images.
You’ll need 2 paper plates for each wheel. Trim the edge off of one of the plates. Now, arrange your 4 construction paper colors, representing the 4 seasons, in a square in the order that they will appear on the plate – Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. Tape them together to hold them in place while you work.
Help your child to measure the exact center of the plate with the edge cut off. When you find the center, place the plate exactly in the center of the construction paper square and draw a circle around it. Cut out the circle from your construction paper. Making sure your measurements are correct and keeping it centered, glue the construction paper circle on the paper plate (with no edges).
