Today’s STEAM Saturday project will teach your little ones about liquid density AND the layers of the ocean! They will learn about the difference between the surface ocean, thermocline ocean, and deep ocean. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 3 small clear containers and 1 large container
- A heavy liquid, like honey, corn syrup, or molasses
- Water
- Vegetable Oil
- Food coloring
Create your three “ocean layers” in the small clear containers by mixing them with food coloring, then have your child guess which layer will rise to the top, which will be in the middle, and which on the bottom. Then pour the liquids into the single large jar and watch what happens! Talk about how each layer represents a layer of the ocean. You can take the experiment to the next level by finding small objects of varying weights from around the house (think coins, buttons, beads, grapes, etc.) to drop into the jar and see where they will settle. As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have fun!
