Gobble, Gobble! It’s turkey time! But how do the turkeys feel about it? In the book Turkey Trouble by Wendy Silvano, Turkey has decided he does NOT want to become the main course! He tries disguise after disguise until he finally finds the perfect one to make this Thanksgiving the best one ever!  Turkey’s adventures inspired a fun STEAM activity that you and your little turkey can do together! Access a read-along of the book HERE.
Challenge your child to design and build a Turkey Hideout for a turkey to avoid becoming Thanksgiving dinner! This project can be done with materials you can find around your house, such as blocks, cardboard, paper towel tubes, or pillows.
First, have your future engineer draw their design out on a piece of paper. Then, they can draw a picture of a the turkey that will be protected by the Turkey Hideout. Using the materials you’ve gathered from around the house, have them build their hideout design with the turkey picture inside.
Next, have them test their hideout. Can people see the turkey inside? If so, they can redesign it to make sure he is fully covered. How many more turkeys can fit inside the hideout? Can it protect the turkey from bad weather? Use a fan to simulate a windy day and see if the hideout can withstand the wind.
Finally, have your child think about what the turkey will do to pass the time while he’s hiding and draw a picture of what that might look like!
As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
We’ll see you right back here next Saturday for another STEAM Saturday activity! Scroll through the rest of our website to learn how Critchlow Adkins is Building Brighter Futures for the children and families we serve!
