It’s STEAM Saturday, and today, we are celebrating Earth Day (which was yesterday)! Teach your little ones about the layers of the Earth’s crust while they make their very own Play Dough Earth Models!
To make your Earth model, you (of course) need play dough. You can either make your own dough using this recipe, or purchase some from the store. You’ll need 6 colors of dough: blue, green, red, orange, yellow, and brown.
First, roll the red dough into a ball – this will be the Earth’s solid inner core. The orange layer will be next, and will serve as the liquid outer core. Next will be the yellow layer, which represents the Earth’s mantle. Fourth is the brown dough, which will cover the yellow and acts as the Earth’s crust. Finally, add the blue dough to the outside to represent the oceans, and green to represent the continents.
Once you’ve finished, cut the planet in two using dental floss, and take a look at the various layers. See if your kids can identify the layers of the Earth as you just taught them to them!
