STEAM Saturday – Paper Chain STEAM! (4-26-2025)

STEAM projects do not have to be complicated and involve lots of supplies or steps.  Sometimes, all your child needs is a simple prompt, some time, and a little creative thinking to figure out how to rise to a challenge!  This week’s STEAM activity is as simple as it gets… All you need is a piece of paper, scissors, and tape!

The goal of this challenge is to make the longest possible paper chain using a single sheet of paper.  You can even get the whole family involved and make it a contest to see who can make the longest paper chain!

When you’re done, think of other things you can observe about your paper chains.

  • Whose paper chain has the most links?
  • What is the difference in length between the shortest paper chain and the longest paper chain?
  • How long would all of your paper chains be if you linked them together?
  • How many pieces of paper do you think you would need to build a chain that goes all the way across the room?

This may be simple project, but it is great for helping your child develop his/her engineering, math, and critical thinking skills.  Plus, who knew you could have so much fun with one piece of paper?

As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
