STEAM Saturday – Oobleck! (8-16-2025)

Sometimes, making a little mess can translate into a big learning experience!  Today, we’re turning a little goo into an awesome chemistry lesson while making Oobleck!  Oobleck is a substance made from corn starch and water.  Your child can learn about chemistry while also practicing his or her fine motor skills and engaging in sensory play!

Before making your Oobleck, it’s always fun to get a little inspiration from a good book.  Check out Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss for a fun start to your Oobleck lesson:

When doing a science experiment, it’s important to start with a hypothesis, or an idea of what you think will happen.  Ask your child what he or she thinks will happen when you mix water and corn starch together.

Now, gather your supplies:

  • 2 cups of corn starch
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • Optional food coloring
  • Gloves, table coverings, and glasses (remember, we said this was a little messy)
  • A big bowl

Did you get the same result you thought you would when you made your hypothesis, or is it different?

What happens when you stop playing with it and let it sit?

What happens when you squeeze it?

Check out the full experiment and more of the science behind it from the Young Inventors Club here.

As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
