STEAM Saturday – Olympic STEAM! (7-26-2025)

Olympic rings

This time last year, we were gathered around our televisions for the 2024 Summer Olympics!  At Critchlow Adkins, our summer campers participate in Olympic Week, which is full of fun challenges and games.  These are great opportunities for some engaging STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) learning!  Check out some fun Olympic STEAM ideas from Science Sparks!

There are all sorts of simple and fun STEAM ideas, like:

Determine the best running surface:

Find out whether the type of ground you run on makes a difference to your speed.  Time how fast you can run the same distance on three different surfaces, like flat ground, grass, and sand.  Write down your times on each surface.  Which surface allowed you to run faster?  Why do you think that is?

Can you throw a heavier ball further than a lighter ball?

Find balls of different sizes and weights.  Try throwing them like a shot putter from the Olympics.  Which balls are the easiest to throw? Which are the most difficult to throw?  Which balls go the furthest distance, and which go the shortest distance?

How does exercise affect your heart rate?

Measure your heart rate before exercise and after exercise.  What happens?  Change your variables by doing different types of exercise… Which makes your heart beat the fastest?  Which has the least effect on your heart rate?

There are tons more Olympics-inspired activities from Science Sparks here!

As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!

We’ll see you right back here next Saturday for another STEAM Saturday activity!  Scroll through the rest of our website to learn how Critchlow Adkins is Building Brighter Futures for the children and families we serve!
