Brrr! With a big snowstorm on Monday and a week of sub-freezing temperatures, winter has definitely arrived! If you love playing in the snow, but need a break from the cold, bring winter indoors when you make your own fake snow!
This simple winter STEAM activity has a little bit of everything!
Science: Talk about weather and how snow forms – check out this information from Brittanica Kids
Technology: Learn about how meteorologists use technology to predict the weather – check out this information from Brittanica Kids
Engineering and Art: Build items out of your fake snow! Your child may need to put on his/her engineering cap to make structures that will stand!
Math: Your kiddo will practice measuring when making the snow recipe.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your fun fluff!
- A Large Tray
- Corn Starch
- Baking Soda
- Water
- Cookie Cutters, etc. to play with the snow
First, pour equal amounts of corn starch and baking soda onto your tray. You can decide how much to use, but for instance, if you use 1 cup of corn starch, you should also measure out 1 cup of baking soda. Mix the powders with your fingers. Next, add enough water to form a ball when you squeeze the mixture together in your hands. Start with a small amount of water and add slowly to make sure you don’t add too much! If your mixture ends up a bit runny, just add more corn starch and baking soda until you get the right consistency.
Once your snow is made, it’s time to have fun! Use cookie cutters, arctic animal toys, or other items from around your house to play! Your fake snow should last for 7-10 days of wintry wonder!
As always, be as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
