One of the most exciting parts of our Critchlow Adkins programming is our innovative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) activities. These age-appropriate projects, created by our Program and Outreach Specialist, Amy Michels, help spark students’ imaginations, promote problem-solving and critical thinking, and nurture a lifelong love of learning.
We love to share the story of the egg drop challenge the students in our School Age Site in Easton took part in last year. The objective was to create a container that would protect an egg so that it wouldn’t break if dropped from a tall height. During the first round, all of the eggs broke, and the students were very disappointed. Site Director Keieve Colbert reminded the children that failure is just part of the process, and that it’s an opportunity to learn what went wrong and identify ways to change one’s approach to create a positive outcome the next time around. Re-energized, the kids broke into teams and worked diligently to redesign their egg drop containers. So, what was the final result? No broken eggs on the next round! This is the power of STEAM!
“STEAM lessons help prepare students to take on real-world challenges using science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The creativity needed in these disciplines helps students form skills needed to solve problems in an innovative way.”
