School’s out for summer, and we know your kids are so excited!  It’s time to get outside and play, and we’ve got the perfect way to sneak a little bit of learning into your summertime shenanigans!  On this STEAM Saturday, we’re focusing on the “M” in STEAM with Sidewalk Chalk Math Games!  These activities will be so much fun, your child won’t even realize that school is in session!

One of the beautiful things about this activity is that it’s so simple, and the only material you need is sidewalk chalk.  The whole world is your chalkboard, and when you’re ready to start again, just wash it away.  Head outside and try these fun games, courtesy of Frugal Fun for Boys and Girls.

Chalk Number Line1. Number Line Games

Draw a big number line from 1 through 20.  An easy way to do this is to make a square for each number and write the number inside.  Once your number line is complete, have your child:

  • Practice counting forward by jumping on each square and saying the numbers.
  • Practice counting backward by jumping on each square and saying the numbers.
  • Practice skip counting by having your child jump ahead 2 or 3 squares and saying the numbers.  For older, bigger children who can jump further, you may be able to skip count by 4 squares!

2. Addition, Subtraction, or Multiplication GridsChalk Addition Table

Draw a grid and place numbers along the top and along the left hand side.  Have your child add, subtract, or multiply their way through the grid!

Chalk Obstacle Course3. Greater Than/Less Than Obstacle Course

Draw an “obstacle course” featuring pairs of numbers side-by-side.  In each pair, have a large number and a small number.  Challenge your child to hop through the course, only landing on the larger (“greater than”) numbers.  Have them start over and only land on the smaller (“less than”) numbers.

Chalk Patterns4. Patterns

Draw a pattern using different shapes and colors.  Then have your child copy your pattern.  They can repeat it as many times as they want.  You can do this over and over again and fill up your whole sidewalk with colorful patterns!

As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
