It’s Spring! The weather is warming up, the birds, flowers, insects, and animals are waking up, and it’s time to get outside and explore!
This week for STEAM Saturday, take your child outside to observe One Square Foot of your back yard, a local park, the beach, or other outdoor spot near your home!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- String
- Measuring Tape
- Scissors
- Magnifying Glass
- Camera
- Pencil
- Notepad/paper
Measure and cut 4 feet of string. Find your spot outside and use the string to mark off a box that is 1 foot wide on all sides. Now it’s time to explore! Have your child get down close to the ground and grab a magnifying glass to see what is going on in the one square foot area. Ask him/her to take photos, draw pictures, and/or write down his/her observations of the plants, insects, and other things living in the area. He/she can also document the weather conditions, time of day, and other details – think about what can be seen, heard, and felt.
This is a great activity that can be used during different seasons, in different areas of your yard, or take it on the road when you go on trips!
As always, be as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
We’ll see you right back here next Saturday for another STEAM Saturday activity! Scroll through the rest of our website to learn how Critchlow Adkins is Building Brighter Futures for the children and families we serve!
