STEAM Saturday – Lincoln’s Log Cabin! (2/15/2025)

Monday is President’s Day, and we are kicking off the celebrations early with some President’s Day STEAM!  Tell your child to put on his/her engineering cap, and get ready to Build Lincoln’s Log Cabin!

This simple STEAM activity can be done with materials found in your home, or even outside.  Have your child take a look around and decide which building materials to use.  Think about collecting sticks from your yard, or using paper towel rolls, straws, pretzels, or even Lincoln Logs, if you have them around the house (We wonder where they got their name…).  Get as creative as you want… there is no wrong answer.

Before you start building, take some time to learn more about our 16th President.  You can start by watching a read-along of Young Abraham Lincoln, Log-Cabin President, by Andrew Woods.

National Geographic Kids

Brittanica Kids

Now that you know lots and lots about President Lincoln, it’s time to start building!  Have your child draw his/her design on paper first, and then get started.  The goal is to build a sound structure that will stay standing, so it’s ok if your kiddo needs to go back to the drawing board and make adjustments to the design in order to build a better log cabin.

Check out this and several other President’s Day activities from Pistco Education HERE.

As always, be as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!

We’ll see you right back here next Saturday for another STEAM Saturday activity!  Scroll through the rest of our website to learn how Critchlow Adkins is Building Brighter Futures for the children and families we serve!
