Let’s get ready for National Find A Rainbow Day (April 3rd)! This fun and simple activity can be done with just a few materials that you can find in your home. Your kiddos are going to love this rainbow science experiment. Let them be fascinated watching their rainbows grow!
Here’s what you’ll need to grow your rainbow:
- Paper Towel
- Markers (Make sure you have all the colors of the rainbow!)
- 2 Clear Glasses
- Water
First, fill both glasses with water, making sure to fill them all the way to the top. For step two, cut the paper towel to fit the width of your glasses – you may need to help your children use the scissors..
Now for the fun part! Have your little ones grab the markers and draw a rainbow pattern on both ends of the paper towel. Challenge them to try to make both sides look identical. Once the rainbows are colored on the paper towel, place one end of the paper towel in one glass, then take the other end of the paper towel and put it in the second glass. For this experiment to work, you need to make sure both ends of the paper towel are in the water!
Time to put your experiment to work! Once the paper towel ends are in the water, sit back and watch the magic happen. Your rainbow should start to grow. Watch all the beautiful colors… red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple!
If you think your kids are too young for this experiment, try preparing it yourself and having them watch! There are lots of STEAM learning opportunities with this experiment – your child will learn about patterns, colors, and myths and facts about rainbows.

As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
