STEAM Saturday – Galaxy Moon Dough! (10/8/2022)

This week was World Space Week, and we thought it would be fun to add a little space into our STEAM Saturday!  Today, we’re giving you and your child a sensory experience by making your own Galaxy Moon Dough!  You can make this fun concoction with ingredients you can find laying around your house or at the dollar store.  Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup Potato Starch
  • 1/2 cup Flour
  • 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
  • Polysorbate 80
  • Food Colouring
  • Glitter to add stars to your galaxy (optional)
  • Large bowl
  • Microwave safe cup
  • Spoon
  • Measuring Cups

First, mix your flour and potato starch in a large bowl.  Next, melt your coconut oil in the microwave until it turns liquid, and add your food coloring to it.  Have your child notice how the oil and the food coloring stay separated.  Now, add 2 drops of polysorbate  80 and stir, and watch as the oil and the color now mix to create colored oil!  This is a great lesson for your child in how emulsifiers work.

Finally, add your colored oil to the large bowl with the flour and corn starch, and mix it until the color is evenly distributed and has a sand-like texture.  To make your sand look like a galaxy, split your mixture and create 2 differently colored sands (think blue and purple).  Once they are made, you can mix them together to create a swirling galaxy.  You can even add glitter to represent stars!
