STEAM Saturday – Fraction Art! (11/9/2024)

Colorful child's artwork made from pieces of construction paper

This week for STEAM Saturday, we are going to focus on the “A” and the “M” in STEAM – Art and Math!  All you need for this simple activity are construction paper, scissors, and glue.  As you create a visual representation of fractions for your child, you are also creating the elements of an awesome art project!

Colorful kids's construction paper artworkStart by cutting your construction paper into a square or circle.  Each square or circle represents a whole.  Cut your square or circle in half and discuss how two halves make a whole.  Next, cut the halves in half to create quarters.  Compare what the quarter pieces look like next to half and whole pieces.

Depending on your child’s age and how well they are understanding the concept of fractions, you can continue cutting to make smaller and smaller fractions.  Consider making each fraction piece from a different color of construction paper to make it more identifiable for your child.  For instance, whole pieces can be red, half pieces can be green, ¼ pieces can be purple, etc.

Once you are done with your lesson on fractions, you’ll be left with lots of colorful pieces of paper in different shapes!  Have your child use these shapes to create a vibrant art project by gluing the pieces to a paper in any design he or she desires!

As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
