STEAM Saturday – Baking Soda Fireworks! (7/2/2022)

Monday is the 4th of July, and we thought we would put a little STEAM in your celebration with a fun activity that will teach your child about chemical reactions:  Baking Soda and Vinegar Fireworks!  For this simple and sparkly experiment, you’ll need:

  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Star cookie cutters (any will do if you don’t have a star)
  • Red, silver, and blue glitter
  • A spoon
  • A small squeeze bottle
  • A tray or large dish

Place the cookie cutters in your tray or dish.  Add a heaping tablespoon of baking soda to each cookie cutter and flatten it out a bit.  Then add a sprinkle of glitter to the top of each one.  Fill your squeeze bottle with vinegar, then squeeze a few drops of vinegar at a time into the cookie cutters.  Go slow so you can really see (and hear) the reaction.  And voila!  You have baking soda and vinegar fireworks!

As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
