One of the best – and tastiest – features of autumn is that it’s apple season! It’s a great time of year for enjoying apple cider, apple pie, applesauce, and more! This week’s STEAM Saturday challenge is aimed at your little engineer, and it only requires one ingredient. Can you guess what it is? That’s right… APPLES!
Grab your apples, find a flat surface, and challenge your future engineer to stack the apples as tall as possible. It may seem difficult at first because the apples are differently shaped and round. But, given a little bit of time your child might discover that the bumps in one apple match the dips in another, and find a way to stack them all! This activity is geared towards preschool and kindergarteners. If needed, you can provide them with toothpicks or playdough to help the apples stay together.
If you want to rev things up for older elementary aged children, you can cut the apples into “blocks” and have them use the apple “blocks” and toothpicks to see how tall of a structure they can build.
While doing your apple stacking, you and your child can also explore biology by learning about the life cycle of the apple: Planting Sprouting Blooming Growing Ripening Falling
And, of course, you can reward yourselves after your excellent learning adventure with a delicious apple treat!
Check out the full activity, more information on the life cycle of an apple, and recommended reading to accompany the project from STEAMSational HERE.
As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
