As you look through our collection of STEAM activities, we hope you notice a pattern: Providing fun enrichment opportunities for your child at home does not have to be expensive or complicated. One great idea is to put together a STEAM Kit, so that you have lots of materials available to create your own experiments and explorations!
You can build your own STEAM Kit with items found around your house and at the dollar store! Here’s a list of ideas:
- A container for your kit (box, basket, etc.)
- Journal
- Magnifying glass
- Ruler
- Flashlight
- Playing cards
- Stickers
- Paper, note cards, card stock, etc.
- Scissors
- Dice
- Pens, pencils
- Markers, crayons, paint
- Pipe cleaners
- Straws
- Toothpicks
- Paper clips
- Rubber bands
- Play dough
- Craft sticks
- Tape, glue
- Legos or other building blocks
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Foam
- Toilet paper and paper towel rolls
- Packing materials
- Milk or egg cartons
This is certainly not a complete list… The possibilities are endless! Brainstorm with your child to create your own list of items for your kit. You can build one big STEAM Kit, separate kits for specific projects, or even a kit for each “letter” in STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math.
Once you have your STEAM Kit(s) ready, you can work with your child to create your own experiments, challenges, and projects together!
As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
