Did you know that this week is National Robotics Week (or RoboWeek, as it’s affectionately called)??? For STEAM Saturday this week, you and your child can celebrate robotics together when you design your very own robot!
Before you create your robot, first take some time to learn more about robots. There are lots of great children’s books about robots. Here’s a great list of read alouds that you can enjoy together!
Next, head online to do some research about robots. Here are some great questions you can ask:
- What is the definition of a robot?
- How do robots work?
- How are robots used?
Some great places to start are Brittanica Kids and Kiddle.
Now it’s time to design your robot! Today, we’re just making a prototype, so you don’t have to make your robot work. First gather your supplies. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Recycled materials from around your home (cardboard, plastic, tin foil, etc.)
- Tape
- Paper and pencil or pen
- Your imagination!
Once you have gathered your materials, spend a little time thinking about what your robot will look like, and what it will do. Write some ideas down on your paper… You can even draw a picture of your machine!
Now it’s time to build! Use your recycled materials to build a prototype robot.
Check out this and other robotics activities from Kodable here!
As always, be as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
We’ll see you right back here next Saturday for another STEAM Saturday activity! Scroll through the rest of our website to learn how Critchlow Adkins is Building Brighter Futures for the children and families we serve!
