STEAM Saturday – Gingerbread Man Trap! (12/14/2024)

Gingerbread Man Trap

‘Tis the season for more holiday STEAM!  This STEAM Saturday, help your child hone his or her engineering skills while building a Gingerbread Man Trap!  This simple activity can be done with recyclable materials found around your home.

Child using recycled materials to build a gingerbread houseStart off by reading the book, How to Catch a Gingerbread Man by Adam Wallace.  In this bestselling book, the Gingerbread Man comes to life during story time and runs loose in a bookstore along with other beloved but mischievous story book characters.

Now that you’ve had some inspiration, challenge your child to brainstorm ways to use items found around your home to build a trap for the Gingerbread Man.  First, brainstorm ideas.  Next, draw out the design plan.  Then, build the trap.  When the trap is ready, test it out!  Does it work?  If not, how can the design be changed to make sure Gingy stays put?  Make updates to the design as necessary.

As always, be as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
