Summer means spending time outside and enjoying nature! Today’s STEAM activity will encourage your child to explore and understand the natural world. Head outside and dissect some flowers!
For this activity, it is best to find flowers with big parts, such as lilies, irises, daffodils, or tulips. You’ll also need paper plates or pieces of cardboard, a magnifying glass if you have one, and tweezers.
Have your child lay a flower out on their paper plate or cardboard. Write the names of the different parts of the flower on your plate or cardboard (root, petal, leaf, pollen, stem), and challenge your child dissect the flower and place the correct parts of the flower next to their names. As you work together to identify the parts of the flower, you can explain their functions to your child. You can also talk about the processes of pollination, fertilization, and germination.
