We thought we would kick off the new school year by sharing a fun STEAM project inspired by every child’s favorite subject… RECESS! First, read the book, The Recess Queen, by Alexis O’Neill. We have provided a read-along video that you and your child can enjoy together!
The Recess Queen is a story about kindness, friendship, and conflict resolution. In the book, the new student in class takes on the playground bully and ultimately shows her how to play with others, share, and to become friends.
After reading the book, challenge your future engineer to design and build his or her own playground using only tape, cardboard tubes, scissors, and paper!
Have them think about what play structures they want to create. They can cut the tubes to make slides, teeter totters, and more. If you have any small people figure toys at home, use them to test out the playground!
This simple project will spark your child’s creativity and help him/her develop critical thinking skills – and it can all be done with supplies you have at home!

As always, get as creative as you want, and above all, have lots of fun learning together!
We’ll see you right back here next Saturday for another STEAM Saturday activity! Scroll through the rest of our website to learn how Critchlow Adkins is Building Brighter Futures for the children and families we serve!
